So it looks like I’m off to London

Ξ November 21st, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ |

Got an offer for the PhD in “Novel Raman Spectroscopy for the determination of bone quality” and accepted this morning. Now I just have to find somewhere to live in Middlesex, find a car, move out there, learn how to do actual Raman spectroscopy, rather than just theory, learn everything to do with bones and it will be fine and dandy.
I hate looking for places to live, it’s like going shopping: something no man should have to endure. What makes it worse is that because I live the other side of the country I have to actually phone up people to talk to them about their place, before I get there. Needless to say I’ve totally avoided that so far and have resorted solely to the solace of the interweb, but just got bored and ended up watching TV and filling my time with menial tasks. This was inevitably followed by the conversation with my mother about “did I phone these places today”, to which I gave a half assed reply about “being busy” and ended up getting the lecture about how “I’m old enough to do these things myself now” and how “I need to get off my backside because things won’t just fall into my lap”. I know she’s right, but I’m too used to actually ignoring her advice until there’s no other option.

PhD Interview!

Ξ November 15th, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ |

Holy Banana’s, Batman! I have a PhD interview in London for UCL tomorrow and I don’t feel particuarly confident. For starters I have to be up by 7:30am, which I haven’t seen for at least a few months, so if the stress doesn’t kill me the early morning will finish me off. Do they give jobs out of pity?

New Board!

Ξ November 14th, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ |

Got another Crossfire board in today and I have to be honest I’m underwhelmed. The package is pretty normal compared to what I’ve received from MSI in the past and the motherboard pretty “Meh” for something which should be enthusiast. It also has the smallest northbridge heatsink I’ve seen for a while (not pictured).

On the topic of motherboards, after a chat with ECS last week they’re now going to send us out final-final retail boards only. Nothing pre-production, so they (assure us) that we should never have a problem again. It means our reviews will come out a bit after the actual board is released, but at least we can tell you this is definately what you’ll actually buy which is far more useful for Bit-tech’s readers. Im tempted to set up odds and take bets on the likelyhood that the “no problems” will actually be reality, as is with anything said in the industry: what is said and what actually happens are two entirely different things.

The Constant Gardener

Damn, that’s one seriously depressing but seriously awesome and powerful movie. I feel miserable, yet, moved to a degree where I am finding it hard to distinguish between fiction and reality within it. It’s hard to even find a way to describe it without giving anything away but I’d recommend it to anyone, don’t find out about it, don’t watch any trailors, just go see it.

This week I ‘av been mostly readin’

Ξ November 8th, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ |

A Brief History of Time, by (Prof?) Steven Hawking. The illustrated version appeals more to my tastes and makes the concepts described within it easier to understand. I’d recommend it for those interested in scientific discussion; even if you aren’t necessarily interested in physics the philosophy behind the concepts is very stimulating.

Last week I finished ‘The Unexpected Einstein’. A very interesting biography analysing Einsteins personal side in a reasonably balanced manner, quoting many, many different peoples opinions about him from records, correspondances etc. Definately interesting to find out about the man behind the icon.

This week saw new cartoons of Family Guy, American Dad and The Simpsons and I have to say The Simpsons has pretty much lost it. I laughed my ass off at Seth MacFarlane’s creations, he is truely the king of american cartoons. However, even a new Halloween Special for The Simpsons couldnt really stimulate my funny bone.
And ‘holy freaking sweet’! CSI has a new crossover: http://www.cbs.com/csi_promo/

The good, the bad and the damn right waste of time.

The Good: . I cant stress how much I love this Shuttle and will shed a small tear as a send it back (not until they ask for it though).

The Bad: I killed the Ethernet port on the ECS board in the pic below during testing yesterday evening.

The Damn Right Waste of Time: ECS, period. Lately we’ve had endless trouble with them. Ive had one board which smoked, got a replacement but we then found out ECS werent even going to sell those so we’re waiting on one which they are. Stability is rarely achieved, (it’s a continual experience with every new board of, “It works! WOW!”) and it wastes everyones time when we get a board that fails within 5 minutes of Prime95, if it even works at all or dies half way through something. Despite the fact they’re full of holes they cant design enthusiast boards for the life of them and I have a list of improvements as long as my arm that I’d love to offer them to build something people might want to actually buy. *grumble grumble*
